I Gede Oka Artha Negara is an accomplished composer, choreographer, dancer, and musician from Bali, Indonesia. He joined Gamelan Sekar Jaya in the United States as their Guest Music Director for their 2010 Spring season. As part of his residency, he was also a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley’s Balinese music program.
He was the Associate Artistic Director and a leading performer in Gamelan Suar Agung from 1992-2010. Gamelan Suar Agung is acknowledged as one of the finest and most influential jegog ensembles in Bali. He is a graduate of ISI Denpasar (Bali’s National Academy of the Arts) where he studied music composition and dance.
Gede Oka began studying Balinese performing arts as a child in West Bali in the village of Sangkaragung, Negara under the tutelage of his father, I Ketut Suwentra, a renowned artist and the found and director of Suar Agung. He also has been training in Balinese dance since the age of 5 years old.
Gede Oka has led Suar Agung to prominent festivals throughout Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
